Nice to Meet You!
The Backstory
Hi! My name is Reizel Larrea-Alvarez and I'm a two-time Emmy award winning journalist, coach and speaker... but I like to say that I'm an anthropologist at heart! :) I am fascinated with the wonder of human potential and dedicated to helping people synergize, amplify and share their talents with the world.
Born in Cuba and raised in Miami, I've had an insatiable curiosity for as long as I can remember. When I was 5 years old, my father and I would play a game called "El Porque de las Cosas" (Translation: The WHY of things). He would sit with me and encourage me to ask him all kinds of questions -- like why is the sky blue or why do people sneeze?
We would then open up an encyclopedia (there was no internet then) and look up the answer together. Doing this was SO much fun for me and it's how I developed a life-long love of learning. My curiosity and love of learning led me to work in various different industries such as accounting, recycling, environmental consulting, clothing manufacturing, and video production. In between I also became a spinning instructor, which I really enjoyed and was a great experience!
Today, having been an entrepreneur for over 25 years across various industries, I can honestly say the common denominator for me has always been about building meaningful relationships and working together in service towards a common goal.

Jumping ALL in, against all odds
When I turned 40, I met my husband, Manny, who has been a photojournalist his entire career for CBS News in Miami. Being surrounded by Manny and his colleagues, it wasn't long before I got the journalism bug and shifted careers again. Manny opened the doors for me to step into journalism, and without any journalism experience, I became the oldest intern in the newsroom. Soon after, I was hired as an investigative producer.
I then set a goal for myself to earn an Emmy award. I would spend day and night studying what the elements of an Emmy Award-winning story looked like. I knew what I wanted and I had a plan on how to get there... and I did! My first year in this new profession I stumbled into, I received 5 nominations and earned 2 Emmy awards. One of the stories, Dangerous Brew, caught the attention of 17 general attorneys around the country concerned with the amount of caffeine and alcohol found in certain energy drinks and 4 months after airing, the story I worked on ended up changing federal law.
Because the companies were only required to reveal the amount of alcohol contained in the drinks, and not the amount of caffeine, no one knew how potentially dangerous the combination of alcohol and caffeine in the energy drinks were, especially with college students being the primary consumers. All this happened because I was relentless in asking one question, "how much caffeine do these drinks contain?" and I got the idea of taking the drinks to be tested at a food lab. As a result, all alcohol energy drinks mixed with caffeine were ordered by the federal government to be removed from the shelves and had to be reformulated.
Looking back, what allowed me to follow my passion and pursue a career in journalism without any prior experience was getting clear on what I wanted and paving a path for myself, while at the same time overcoming my limiting beliefs and not letting the negative opinions of those around me sway me from doing what I really wanted. I have learned that the most important relationship we need to build is the one with ourselves, first. That means negotiating with your own limiting beliefs, having empathy for yourself and recognizing your unique value and contribution. If you can find synergy with yourself, you can then find it with others.
Fast forward and that's why I became a coach! My mission is to help people build synergistic relationships with themselves AND with others so they can drive maximum results in their personal and professional lives.
Why Synergy?
Synergy: An interaction or cooperation giving rise to a whole that is greater than the simple sum of its parts.
If you look closely, you'll realize that nothing in this world exists on its own... including us! As human beings, we rely upon each other's unique skills and talents to collaborate, survive and evolve. The greatest inventions, discoveries and creations we have today are a result of synergy. When we work together, we co-create outcomes that are greater than what could have been accomplished individually. It's what moves the human race forward!
Synergy is not only something we have with others, however. Synergy also exists within! Think about it, when our body is working in synergy with itself (our heart, lungs, nervous system etc) we feel great! But when something is off, and not working in synergy, we get sick. The same thing happens with our mind!
The thing is, a lot of people are NOT working in synergy with themselves because they resist being self-aware, are not authentic to who they are and are not aligned with the value they bring to the table. I know this because that used to be me, too. There was a time when I wouldn't ask for what I wanted, I'd settle for less and I didn't know the true value of my contributions. I eventually realized that I would never be able to negotiate great deals with my clients if I was constantly negotiating AGAINST myself by undervaluing my services and selling myself short. I had to get honest and clear about the limiting beliefs I had that were holding me back. All the negotiation strategies I'd read about wouldn't help me if I didn't develop the proper mindset and align with my worth so that I could build the confidence needed to negotiate in the first place.
I learned that confidence is a result of your mindset and being in synergy with yourself.
Living with a mindset of synergy allows us to connect with who we truly are, not what we think other people expect us to be. It allows us to look at the context of how we are experiencing our life, evaluate it, and change it to one that more accurately reflects how we want to serve so we can then tap into our human potential and steer our life in the direction we want.
Synergy is the secret recipe that generates personal fulfillment and builds long-lasting, trusting relationships in our business as well as in our personal lives. The alignment and transparency that comes from approaching life with a philosophy of synergy creates a magical space in which we can innovate and work together to accomplish things we never even thought possible!
When we have synergy within AND with others, we can get what we want, together.
